Injury Types

Sprains, Strains, Contusions, Whiplash

Strains are injuries that involve the stretching or tearing of a muscle and tendon structure.

A sprain is an injury involving the stretching or tearing of a ligament, which help provide joint stability. A severely damaged ligament or joint capsule can cause instability in a joint. These types of injuries are uncommon, especially in the neck and back.

Since sprains involve actual damage to the ligaments, other more severe injuries usually accompany the sprain (fractures, dislocations, etc.)

Strains and sprains usually heal within 3-6 weeks with or without treatment.

Whiplash - The most common soft tissue injury in a motor vehicle accident Typically happens to a driver or passenger in the front seat of a vehicle at rest when he/she is hit from behind

Treatment of soft tissue injuries - Rest; amount depends on type & severity of injury, ice to the area, maximum therapeutic benefit realized within the first 24-72 hours, analgesics, muscle relaxers and/or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, increase activity as early as possible and to avoid heavy lifting and sports

Cervical disc injury: The symptoms of a cervical herniated disc often resemble other disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, problems with the rotator cuff and gout. In some patients, a cervical herniated disc can cause spinal cord compression where disc material pushes on the spinal cord. Symptoms include awkward or stumbling gait, difficulty with fine motor skills in the hands and arms, and tingling or "shock" type feelings down the torso or into the legs.

Lumbosacral disc injury: Lumbar disc herniations occur in the lower back, most often between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebral bodies or between the fifth and the sacrum. Symptoms can affect the lower back, buttocks, thigh, and may radiate into the foot and/or toe.
