Safety Issues Associated with Injuries
There are a number of safety issues that can lead to motor vehicle accidents involving deaths and un-intentional injuries. By utilizing precautionary measures, we can reduce the amount of car accidents. When we speed, don’t wear our seatbelts, or get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, we are putting ourselves and others at risk.
There are mandated laws across the United States that are in effect mainly for our protection.
Seatbelts - There are 49 states plus D.C. that have mandatory seatbelt laws in effect. There has been a dramatic increase in the use of seatbelts and in 2005, the use of seatbelts reached 85% in states with enforced laws. Safety belts have been proven to save lives and provide the greatest protection against occupant ejection. When used correctly, the risk of a fatal injury or a moderate to serious injury to a front seat passenger reduces drastically. Since 2005, over 15,000 lives have been saved by the use of seatbelts.
Keep in mind, there are states where law enforcement will issue warnings, tickets and citations for not wearing your seatbelt.
Alcohol - Approximately every 31 minutes there is an average of one alcohol related death reported. Nearly 40% of all traffic involve an intoxicated or alcohol impaired driver. It is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 or higher. Car accidents associated with alcohol can cause injury to the intoxicated driver or the non-intoxicated passenger or other drivers who are sober. The percentage of accidents involving alcohol is higher on the weekends and at night where the percentage of accidents is lower during the weekdays.
Speed - About half of all speeding related accidents occur on roads where the posted speed is 55 miles per hour or more. The cost of speeding related accidents costs the nation of over $40 billion yearly. Excessive speed accounts for about 30% of all automobile fatal accidents even though, the number of accidents involving speed has not changed noticeably over the last 10 years.
Distractions - When you are driving your vehicle, there are a number of distractions that can potentially result in an accident. Just around 1.5 million accidents occur each year due to distracted drivers. The uses of cell phones and texting, changing the radio, looking in the mirror, or simply glancing off of the road for a second are all categorized as driving distractions. Over 10% of the driving population is occupied with their cell phone which will continue to increase.
